Cyprus's Political System
Cyprus is a presidential republic, with the president serving as both head of state and head of government. The president is elected for a five-year term and can serve no more than two terms.
Cyprus's Accession to the European Union
Cyprus became a full member of the European Union (EU) in 2004. However, due to the island's ongoing division, the EU's legislation is suspended in Northern Cyprus until a final settlement of the Cyprus problem is reached.
Division of the Island
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded the island in response to a Greek-backed coup attempt. The Turkish-controlled northern third of the island declared independence in 1983, although it is not recognized by any country other than Turkey.
EU Membership Status
Despite being a divided country, Cyprus was accepted into the EU as a whole. However, the EU's legislation is only implemented in the government-controlled area of the island, known as the Republic of Cyprus.

- 2013 - The symbolic Ledra Street crossing between the north and south of the island is opened
Challenges of EU Membership
Cyprus faces a number of challenges as a member of the EU, including the ongoing division of the island and the economic crisis that hit the country in 2013. However, the EU has also provided Cyprus with financial and technical assistance, and the country has made progress in implementing EU reforms.
